Kiriko Toyoshima (Kiriko Toyoshima): Born and raised in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture
Kiriko Toshima, who grew up in Beppu, grew up in an environment where hot springs are always in his daily life, and has been familiar with the Tetsuwa Onsen Town, a school road, since he was a student. While visiting Kannawa Onsen, I realized that there were hot springs with different spring quality even in the same area, and my interest in the hot springs grew steadily and became absorbed. I want more people to know Kannawa Onsen! I want you to enjoy the hot spring more! I started the guide with that feeling, and conveys the charm of iron rings with the love of hot springs.

Take a stroll through Kannawa Onsen, which is also famous as a hot spring resort, one of the "Beppu Hachiyu". Including Hiratagawa (Hiratagawa), which has turned green due to the components of the hot spring, and the device "Yumetake", a device that cools the source naturally, we will guide you to recommended hot spring spots and local hot spring tours. You can learn about the history of Kannawa Onsen and the effects of hot springs while traveling through the back alleys of the hot spring town where the steam rises.

Kannawa Onsen "Mushiyu" Experience

Tetsuwa Onsen Town, a hot spring town with the source hunter, Kiriko Toshima
It is said that steamed hot water was founded in 1276 in the Kamakura period by a monk, Ippin Shonin. (* 1) In the stone room warmed by the fumarole of a hot spring, lying on the floor covered with medicinal herbs called "sekisho" and steam the whole body. It warms body from the core and stimulates sweating while feeling the cool scent of irises. This is an experience that can only be done because the hot spring of the iron ring is a hot spring. （※2）

Traditional cooking method from the Edo period "Jigoku steamed"

In Beppu for a long time, dangerous places where hot spring fumaroles, hot mud, hot water, etc. are called "hell", and the cooking method using hot spring steam is called "hell steaming." (* 3) In the "Hell Steaming" experience, you can choose and add your favorite ingredients, such as seafood and meat, to the bamboo zaru with vegetables. Put the bamboo zaru containing ingredients in the kettle as it is, steamed with steam of about 100 ° C in about 8 to 10 minutes, and enjoy the hell steamed lunch.
